If you’re an animal lover Western Australia is home to some of the most unique creatures in the world. And the best part? You can get up close and personal with most of them! We’ve rounded up some of our favourite animal adventure experiences in Western Australia, from cuddly critters to the biggest fish in the sea:

  1. Get up close (and a selfie!) with quokkas
You’ve probably seen them on Instagram – the cute and furry little fellas who are more than happy to pose for selfies with tourists! Head to Rottnest Island and see if you can spot a quokka, which only live in Western Australia, feeding during the day, although they also spend a lot of time sleeping under shady bushes!

  1. Take a ride on a camel
It’s the experience that’s on the bucket list of many travellers – taking a camel safari along the beach in Broome. Take one of the pre-sunset tours and watch the sun go down over the ocean on Cable Beach – a real treat for us Eastern Seaboard dwellers! The best part of booking with Broome Camel Safaris is that their website details the names and personalities of each camel on their caravan, so you can get to know your trusty steed before you visit!

  1. Dive with whale sharks
Is it a whale? Is it a shark? No, it’s a whale shark, and it’s the world’s largest fish! Its mouth can be up to 1.5m wide, but don’t worry, they prefer to eat plankton so you can get up close and personal without worrying about copping a nip! You can book a tour to swim with these gentle giants of the sea through Ningaloo Discovery, even staying overnight on a catamaran on the waters of the Ningaloo Reef.

  1. Spot humpback whales
From September to November the humpback whales migrate past Perth’s beaches and can be spotted from a whale watching adventure cruise, viewing platforms on Rottnest Island and even sometimes from the shore.

  1. Party with penguins
It’s no surprise what lives on Penguin Island – yes, penguins! The island is home to Fairy Penguins, the smallest penguin on earth, and you can watch them feed and frolic every day. You can also swim, snorkel and cruise with other Australian native birds and animals including sea lions, wild bottle nose dolphins and kangaroos. You can even kayak or kite board, making this little island a must-visit while you’re in WA.

See rare and extraordinary animals up-close at the Perth Zoo, which features creatures from all over the globe. You and the kids can learn about their conservation efforts, breeding programs and even go eye-to-eye with critters like lemurs, rhinos and elephants!
